Portugal begins sharing electronic prescriptions with Lithuania

Portugal, through SPMS (Shared Services of the Ministry of Health), has started sharing electronic prescriptions and dispensing records with Lithuania as part of the MyHealth@EU initiative. This advancement strengthens cross-border health data sharing among European Union (EU) Member States, facilitating continuity of healthcare for citizens traveling across Europe.

The MyHealth@EU infrastructure enables the exchange of health information between healthcare professionals from different countries, always with the patient’s consent. The network, which currently includes 14 Member States, contributes to safer healthcare and reduces errors in service delivery.

Portugal participates both as a country of affiliation (Country A) and as a treatment country (Country B), allowing the sharing of electronic Health Summaries and the dispensing of prescriptions issued in Portugal within other Member States.

At present, Portugal already shares health data with 12 countries: Malta, Croatia, Luxembourg, France, Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania.

SPMS remains committed to advancing digital health, continuing tests to establish connections with new countries through the MyHealth@EU infrastructure.
